Meet the Artist | Miłka Zaleska

How did your journey as an artist start?
Coming from a family of artists, I always felt a desire to create, but my path wasn’t obvious. I never imagined I’d actually become an artist. I tried drawing, painting, even making silver jewellery, but none of it felt quite right. Then a friend mentioned pottery, and I signed up for a three-class course in Sydney, where I was living at the time.
By the second week, Sydney went into lockdown. With nothing else to do, I hired a wheel, bought about 10 kg of clay, and started practicing in the garage.
The real breakthrough came when I moved to New Zealand and began working alongside Peter Collis. That’s when I truly felt: this is what I want to do with my life.
What’s your biggest source of inspiration?
I love beautiful man-made things. Fashion, design in its broadest sense, and architecture. I find inspiration in forms across disciplines: textures and surfaces, silhouettes and shadows, and the poetry of negative space.

How did you find your unique way of creating?
I found over time that I can follow a process but the best pieces come out of freeflow when I don't follow any plan. This has its downsides however.
How does creating art make you feel?
It makes me feel free.
Tell us about the future - what are your aspirations both personally and professionally?
The future I had planned is happening now. I just moved to Denmark, and my long-term plan was to find a studio and pursue pottery full-time within a year. But the universe had different plans - an opportunity came to me just two weeks after I moved. I now rent a space in Copenhagen and have committed myself to seeing where this journey leads.
